Foundation Certificate

This is aimed at pupils nearing completion of a secondary school education or first year College Student.

The candidate must successfully complete:

  • A one and a half hour question paper
  • A three-hour practical exam
  • Three practical assignments completed in one academic year (supplied by The Institute of Carpenters).

Further examinations can be taken at four levels:

  • Intermediate
  • Licentiate (LIOC)
  • Member (MIOC)
  • Fellowship (FIOC)

Intermediate

This is aimed at students in basic training. It involves a four-hour practical exam and one and half hour Associated Vocational Technology paper.

Licentiate (LIOC)

This requires successful completion of a seven-hour practical exam.

Member (MIOC)

This requires successful completion of:

  • A seven-hour practical exam
  • A two-hour technology paper relating to joinery, shopfitting and carpentry
  • A two-hour specialist paper on joinery and shopfitting or carpentry.

Fellowship (FIOC)

Members over 30 (or over 35 without the examination) must have appropriate supervisory experience and pass the following exams:

  • A three-hour paper relating to joinery or carpentry practice
  • A three-hour technology paper covering organisation and supervision
