It was set up to "recognise excellence in the art, craft, science and practice of carpentry, joinery and shopfitting".

The benefits

The Master Certificate Scheme offers a number of advantages to those wishing to remain one step ahead in their profession.  It provides:

  • the highest form of accreditation available for the profession;
  • a realistic goal beyond NVQ level 3 for younger professionals;
  • the status and prestige of official recognition of your superior skills; and
  • a route to pursue continuing professional development.

As a holder of a Master Certificate, you will be included on a list of skilled woodworking professionals who can offer the very highest standards of workmanship in their chosen vocation.

Types of Master Certificate

You must be a member of the Institute of Carpenters to hold the Master Certificate.  The Certificate is offered in three categories although it is possible to gain a Certificate in more than one category:

  • Master Carpenter
  • Master Joiner
  • Master Shopfitter

How to achieve the Master Certificate

Before applying for the Master Certificate you must first gain a Licentiateship of the City & Guilds of London Institute

You will also need:

1.  An Advanced Craft Certificate in Wood Occupations; or
    
an NVQ Level 3 Certificate in Wood Occupations; or
    
IOC Advanced Craft Certificate

AND

2.  Evidence that you have completed an appropriate apprenticeship; or
     documentary evidence that you have completed five years appropriate employment plus a programme of valid training.

AND

3.  Four subjects from Construction Crafts Supplementary Studies;  or one of the following qualifications:

    (a)  BTEC Certificate in Management Studies
    (b)  Relevant BTEC or SCOTVEC High National Certificate or Diploma
    (c)  An appropriate degree
    (d)  Higher level NVQ in Supervision and Management
    (f)  If you are over 26 and do not have of these qualifications - documentary evidence of five years in a managerial/supervisory position
         or
         documentary evidence of completion of a range of short training/educational courses which you have successfully applied in your work.
